POPCEN FINAL COUNTS   NEWS AROUND SOCSARGEN

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Proclamation No. 1346, which declared August 2007 as National Census Month. Citing the significance of an up-to-date and comprehensive population count to national development planning, President Arroyo enjoined all departments and other government agencies to implement and execute the operational plans, directives, and orders for the conduct of the 2007 Census of Population (POPCEN 2007). The census undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) began last August 1.

POPCEN 2007 is aimed to make a complete count of all residents, both Filipinos and foreigners who have stayed in the country for at least a year. It also hopes to collect basic information about the number of people residing within a house, their age, gender, civil status, education, and other demographic and socio-economic characteristics.

About 40,000 NSO-trained census enumerators gathered population data through house-to-house visits and personal interview of the household head or any responsible member of the household. All areas were covered including exclusive subdivisions and condominiums. Institutional populations such as those living in hospitals, sanitaria, penitentiary, military camps, convents, and seminaries were likewise enumerated. Basic information to be gathered include the number of people living within the house, their age, gender, marital status, education, and other demographic, social and economic characteristics.

The population count by province, city, municipality, and barangay shall be released on February 28, 2008. The final count shall be considered official for all purposes upon proclamation by the President of the Philippines.

The annual observance of this event has two-fold objectives, viz (1) to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the value and importance of statistics, and (2) to elicit the support and cooperation of the general public in upgrading the quality and standard of statistics in the country. The theme for this year’s celebration is "Statistics and Action: A Road to a Better Life Through the MDGs." Agencies are enjoined to translate into local dialects and formulate a sub-theme depending on the focus of statistical activities of the agency or the local government unit.
